The fragile human

As humans, we are naturally vulnerable. Man is capable of so much, but is powerless in conditions of war, mental or physical violence, oppression, torture and exploitation. The artists in the exhibition The vulnerable human, each approach this topic from their own perspective. For one artist shocking events like sexual abuse are the starting point for work. For another it is the suffering of others, illness and powerlessness. For another it is the uncertainty of life, its fragility being the very reason to show how vulnerable we are as human beings.

“New UN chief António Guterres will stand up for the vulnerable” read De Volkskrant on the 6th of October this year. You need only open such a newspaper or watch the news on television or films on YouTube to see that such a statement is an absolute necessity. A large part of the world is on fire with wars and natural disasters. People are lost and are more vulnerable than ever, a safe home is unthinkable for millions. This is the situation in the year 2016.

In the Netherlands there is the danger that vulnerable groups of people (those with disabilities, refugees, unemployed, long-term sick, drug addicts, the homeless) could fall by the wayside. There are still numerous safety nets, but even societal participation has its limits and as a result tolerance decreases and loneliness increases.

Visual artists show from their own perspective how vulnerable people in different situations are or can be. The personal is made universal. Despite all the achievements of the last centuries, the powerlessness in dealing with one another with tolerance and responsibility in order to coexist, is huge. Art does not offer solutions, but it can give direction and meaning when thinking about these issues. In The vulnerable human response, consequence, understanding, power, powerlessness, honour, guilt and innocence come together.
